HERE WeGo: Maps & Navigation 4.11.300

The Competition is Here

I never liked Google Maps. The app always sucked the battery like a triple-A game, it had too many bells and whistles, and it barely allowed you to use it offline. But for a while, I thought that was the price for not getting a proper GPS device. However, isn't the miniaturization and the development of mobile devices enough of an incentive for alternatives? Yes, it is! HERE did not only come up with wego.here.com, an online map, location finder, and route planner but the HERE WeGo app is all of this in a mobile form.

The most obvious advantage that I noticed over good ol' goo-gul is the swiftness with which the maps load, even those that are not local. Yes, that's right. Local maps are back on the menu. Instead of downloading map sections that include unnecessary details, with HERE WeGo you can download map packs easily. There are map packs for every continent, as well as for individual countries (for however long that might be the case, politically speaking).

HERE WeGo Maps & GPS

The Map layer markings are easy to interpret, the colors being bright and clear. You can also view a "satellite" layer and switch between real-time traffic information and public transportation "transit" info if any are available.

Just like on the online site, you can search addresses and set-up routes. HERE WeGo uses the map data to present variable route plans using different transportation methods. Nothing new here. However, HERE WeGo also comes with navigation. The navigation interface is very permissive. You can swipe left and right, and you can also rotate the view around the nav-vector, which looks like it came out of a WipeOut game. In the Settings menu, you can switch speed alerts on or off.

The navigation voice is English by default, but you can download dozens of variations of English and other languages for free. In fact, the whole thing is free, app, maps, and nav.

What I also love about it is that you can always check for known transportation methods in your vicinity based on your current location. This feature makes getting around a new city a breeze. All you need to worry is how ticketing works.

Final Thoughts

You can tell that I really like HERE WeGo. I don't remember it needing too much access to personal information, unlike the competition. That's what made me install it, but the easiness of use and free resources are what give it staying power. I would instead upgrade my storage capacity than uninstall HERE WeGo on a whim.
